Endangered lemur
Based on surveys and monitoring conducted ProFauna Indonesia since 2000 until 2006, is estimated every year there are approximately 6000 to 7000 tail lemur is caught from the wild in parts of Indonesia for trade. This becomes serious for lemur conservation in nature, given the proliferation of slow loris is just enough to bear a child within a year and a half.
Another problem is the absence of definitive scientific data on wild lemur population in nature. Lemur is active at night with the slow motion made it very difficult to meet lemur in nature. Strangely lemur captors could easily find a lemur in the wild. Unconsciously feared lemur populations in nature will come down drastically due to the arrest to be traded.
Although slow loris has been protected, but enforcement efforts must be intensified. Protection at the international level is more stringent by inserting into the lemur apendix I of CITES will help slow loris to remain stable. Because the lemur has been protected by law Unang Republic of Indonesia, the Indonesian government rightly also supports efforts to raise the status of lemur into apendix I of CITES. Thus international trade lemur will not be more natural result of the arrest.
